april reads

April was a light reading month! I only read five books, which brings me up to 34/52 for the year. Sometimes when I’m in a weird place mentally, I have a hard time jumping into the world of others. April was a weird month so I am not surprised that I didn’t read as much. Here are my April reads:

Snapped

This is the second book I’ve read in Alexa Martin’s Playbook series. I’ve read them out of order but they stand alone! Snapped is a story about a football player, Quinton, who takes a knee during the anthem and his new PR manager, Elliot. After a disaster of a first meeting, they begin to break down each other’s walls. Elliot is mixed race and she was raised by her white dad, so she has a hard time understanding some of the racism that Quinton is fighting against. I really enjoyed the character arc for Elliot! She has to grapple with her identity and face parts of her that she has pushed away. I love a romance that makes you think!

Get A Life, Chloe Brown

Ok. Is it possible for something to be so sweet, you melt on the inside?! The best way I can describe this book is that it’s like eating a big, delicious piece of chocolate cake. Chloe has made a list of ways that she needs to “get a life” and she enlists resident bad boy, Redford, to help her. Lo and behold, they fall in love, but they both have trauma from past relationships that threatens their budding romance. I had a hard time listening to this book at first, but it’s worth it because the accents are *chef’s kiss* PERFECT!

How to Fail at Flirting

I guess I had a thing about lists this month? Naya is on track for tenure at her university, but her friends insist that she takes a night off and lives a little. Well, when they both abandon her, Naya decides its ok to flirt a little with the man sitting next to her at the bar, Jake. Flirting turns into a night on the town, which turns into an almost hookup. Jake is perfect for her, but she finds out he’s tangled up in restructuring the university which puts a damper on their fling. Add that to the fact that Naya’s abusive ex has shown back up and Naya is at a total loss on how to move forward. CW: Abuse. This might be hard for you to read if you are triggered by abusive relationships.

Blood Heir

Blood Heir is a fantastical tale of a corrupt empire where Affinites are sold and indentured and used for their powers. Ana is the crown princess of the empire and everyone assumes she is dead. Really, she’s been in hiding for almost a year trying to find the man who killed her father. She enlists the help of devilish con-man Ramson Quicktongue as they go on a whirlwind adventure. Along the way, Ana finds out the horrors that Affinites go through which leads her to work to understand her own affinity – blood. This is the first in a trilogy and ends in a cliffhanger! I’m excited to read the second book, Red Tigress, which is out now!

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton

I know I say that every Bridgerton is my favorite, but I think this one is my favorite!!! Finally, Lady Whistledown’s identity is revealed as none other than Penelope Featherington, which if you watch the show you already knew this. But now, Colin knows as well, and the secret is bound to get out sooner or later. This book tells of Colin and Penelope’s friendship to love affair. Colin’s realization of his feelings for Penelope is about the sweetest thing ever! I just love reading about love.
