February + march reads

February was a crazy month, but I still got in 9 books! That puts me at 21 for the year so I might need to up my goal of 52 books in 2021. March included 9 more books. Here’s what I read:

The Viscount Who Loved Me

Book two in the Bridgerton series follows the eldest Bridgerton, Anthony, in his quest to find a wife but most certainly not a love match because why on earth would you marry for love?? He intends to court Edwina Sheffield, but her older sister Kate would never let the likes of rake Anthony Bridgerton marry her sister. I was a big fan of this one! Kate and Anthony are so similar and so different at the same time and it makes their dynamic absolutely lovely.

There’s Something About Sweetie

UGH – all of the body positivity and young love that I needed in my life! Sweetie and Ashish’s relationship starts after Sweetie’s parents claim she’s not right for Ashish Patel, insinuating that he was too good for her due to her weight. Sweetie goes behind her parents back to go on a series of dates with Ashish, where they are both able to learn more about what it means to stand up for yourself.

A Pho Love Story

Romeo and Juliet of Vietnamese restaurants? Yes. Please. This book was so sweet! I really loved reading about the family dynamics and appreciated the perspective of both sets of parents coming to the United States as refugees. Linh and Bao are from rival families, but neither of them are quite sure why the families hate each other so much. When they are assigned to a school project together they get to know each other and start dating. Family secrets begin to come out and Linh and Bao will have to decide how to move forward in their relationship.

The Dating Plan

I got this in my Book of the Month box and read it all in one day! It was an easy read but also so fun. I loved Daisy and Liam’s dynamic – Daisy being the strong-willed computer science genius and Liam being the elusive bad boy. This book has it all: enemies to lovers, fake fiancees, rekindled romance! I didn’t realize when I started that The Marriage Game was the first book, but it’s a stand alone series so you can read them out of order. *Available on March 16.

The Heiress Gets a Duke

Because I LOVE a good Regency Era romance, this one was right up my alley! In this book, American heiress August travels with her family over to London for the season. Because of her family’s success in the US, she is relieved that she will not be forced to marry as some of her friends have been. Until a roguish duke begins courting her sister and her parents realize how nice it would be for the business to have an association with a duke. August can’t bear allowing her sister to succumb to such a horrible fate, so she takes matters into her own hands.

The Marriage Game

After I read The Dating Plan, I knew I had to read this one! Layla Patel’s father is in the hospital, but before he got sick he signed her up for a dating website and arranged a series of dates. With no one to chaperone, her new office mate Sam Mehta, makes a wager. He’ll chaperone the dates if he can get his office back. There were several times I laughed out loud! I was a big fan of this enemies to lovers trope.

One to Watch

Alright y’all. I reallllllly wanted to love this book but I just didn’t. I’m wondering if it was too hyped up? So many people recommended it to me because of my love of body positivity and the Bachelor but I just wanted MORE actual romance out of the book and less drama. Bea is a plus size fashion blogger who is recruited to be the lead on a bachelor like series called “Main Squeeze.” I was never truly invested in Bea ending up with any of the love interests and I never felt like we got a true resolution on her feeling worthy (it was danced around and not specifically addressed). Don’t get me wrong, this was a fun read! It just lacked any of the substance I really wanted.

Charming as a Verb

Halti is a first generation American, attending a prestigious high school in New York City. His mom is a rookie firefighter and his dad is the super of the apartment complex they live in. Halti has always used his charm to help him succeed, whether it’s in school or in his (slightly immoral) dog walking business. When one of his classmates, Corinne Troy, learns that his business is a scheme she blackmails him to help her appear “friendlier” so that she can get a good college recommendation. Through a series of events, Halti and Corinne begin dating but in his desperation to get into Columbia, Halti does something that he can never undo.

It Had to Be You

Alright, last book for February! This book begins with the death of Liv’s husband, Eliot, and she finds out from his mistress, Savannah. Lo and behold, Eliot had recently added Savannah into the will and now she and Liv co-own their wedding business. I was worried this book would be all about Liv and Savannah’s rivalry, but I was pleasantly surprised by how their story unfolded! This book reminds me of the movie “Valentine’s Day” where all of the stories are interconnected in some way. There’s a little bit of everything – enemies to lovers, second chance, LGBTQ+, diverse love – but I never felt like it was too much! *Available on May 4.

The Ex Talk

On to March! I started with The Ex Talk. Two radio workers pretend to be exes for a podcast but of course they fall in love. This book was highly anticipated this year and I liked it but it wasn’t life changing. It’s good if you need a light and fun rom-com!

Twice Shy

Ohhhh I loved this one! A down on her luck Maybell has just inherited her great aunt’s historic mansion, which something that would only happen in her non-stop daydreams. However, when she arrives, she learns that her great aunt left the house to her AND the world’s grouchiest groundskeeper, Wesley. They have to work together to figure out what to do with the house as it falls apart around them. This book was so sweet. I love Sarah Hogle’s other book, “You Deserve Each Other” and this one did not disappoint. The focus on anxiety and what it looks and feels like was refreshing. *Available April 6.

I’m So Effing Tired

This book was fine. I really liked the format and how in depth Shah gets into the science behind why we need to make certain changes. It did get slightly repetitive and I did find myself saying, “Ok, I want to actually see the plan now!” Though intermittent fasting isn’t new, I appreciate Shah’s approach of doing what’s best for you. There are levels of the plan from beginner to advanced and two weeks worth of recipes are included. It is described as a reset, but one that Shah suggests you continue for several years to see optimal results. Several non-food related ways to destress are also mentioned. If you struggle with disordered eating, this book might not be a great choice.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

WHAT THE WHAT?! Ok, I tore through the Hunger Games series in college and this prequel has been on my list for a while. In this book, we follow President Coriolanus Snow as he mentors the girl tribute from District 12, Lucy Gray, in the 10th annual hunger games. The games don’t look anything like how we originally see them and Snow is often tasked with ways to make people care about the games. There are so many similarities between Lucy Gray and Katniss so it is fun to speculate how the two might be connected. Throughout the book, we see Snow battling between his hatred of the districts, his need for justice for his mother and father, and his infatuation with Lucy Gray. I truly enjoyed it!

Book of Love

This story was so sweet and fun! I loved the juxtaposition of Cordelia, a humble yet determined book maker, and Stroud, a prankster Duke. They respect each other while also challenging each other which I love to see. I laughed out loud several times. I love reading historical fiction centered around women’s rights and this one did not disappoint! *Available April 20.

Midnight Sun

In case you don’t know, Midnight Sun is the retelling of the first Twilight book from Edward’s perspective. I’m not sure what I thought it was going to be but I definitely thought we would get some kind of new information. Instead, it was exactly what we read in Twilight but from Edward’s perspective… That being said, if you are a fan of the books it might be worth a read… or just rewatch the movies.

An Offer From A Gentleman (Bridgertons #3)

Ok but will I just love each new Bridgerton more than the last?! This one is Benedict’s story. He falls in love with a girl he met at a masquerade ball, only she’s never to be seen again. That special someone is none other than Sophie Becket, the bastard daughter of an Earl who gets stuck with her evil stepmother and stepsisters (yes, it’s very Cinderella). Sophie and Benedict run into each other again when Sophie is a maid at a country house where Benedict has come for a party. He essentially rescues her from a gang rape situation, then she saves him when he gets sick, Benedict falls in love but can’t stop thinking about masquerade lady. Oh and there’s the little problem of marrying beneath his class. LOVED. IT.

Ten Rules for Faking It

Alright, Read with Rachel book club is BACK and this was our first pick! Also, for some reason this was the month of radio romances?! Either way, I loved this one. Everly has terrible social anxiety and accidentally announces her terrible love life to the entire listener base of her radio station. The station manager, Chris, decides to turn her faux pas into a mini version of the Bachelor. But what happens when both of them realize they actually want to date each other?!
